Pop Up Church is designed to 'do what it says on the tin'. We do not have a building, but we bring church into the heart of the community through our unique approach to Christian outreach.
Faith ~ Hope ~ Love - in action
WHO ARE WE?
The founding members of the church are Steve and Elaine Taylor, who reside in Abergavenny. Steve has been a Christian for as long as he can remember and served as a minister for over 25 years. Although he retains his "Reverend" title, he seldom uses it. Elaine has been a Christian since 1994. Both have encountered their share of life's challenges and possess a wealth of life experience.
OUR VISION
Pop Up Church stands apart from the modern concept of a "community church". The Bible teaches us that the church is the people, not a building. The first 'church' was established by Jesus' disciples, who were instructed to go out into the world and share God's love. They engaged with various communities, cities, and even countries, and we follow that same pattern today. Pop Up Church is portable, allowing us to meet people at their point of need. Since we don't have a building, we don't require financial support from our attendees; both Steve and Elaine work full-time to sustain our mission.
Wherever we are, we do not preach or judge. A relationship with God is personal. We lack the structure and rules found in most churches; for instance, everyone is welcome to partake in communion with us. Our mission is to provide opportunities for you to connect with Him and support you on your journey of faith.
CAR BOOT SALES
Pop Up Church officially launched on 10 May 2015 at the Pen-Y-Fal Car Boot Sale just outside Abergavenny. Besides the usual church activities, we aim to serve the bootie community. We offer care and support to those in need or anyone wishing to chat. We even cater to our four-legged friends with fresh water and cooling sprays. We have a collection of items for which we ask for donations—good condition Bibles, study guides, and testimonial books for adults, as well as a selection of Bibles, storybooks, and activity books for younger individuals. Additionally, we provide free tracts, comics, and our ever-reliable prayer box. This year, we expanded into Christian gifts, including jewelry, ornaments, and bags.
TOWN CENTRE
On Good Friday, we gather in the town centre to share the story of the crucifixion. Everyone is welcome to join us for a meaningful communion experience. Occasionally, we even share hot cross buns!
Leading up to Christmas, we take our Nativity Frieze out—a picture of the nativity with cut-out faces. Children and adults alike can put their faces through the holes and become part of the Nativity. We encourage people to take their own photos, which they can use for Christmas cards. There is no charge for this activity, and we have received approval from the county council for all our street initiatives.
WINTER WARMER BREAKFAST CLUB
On the last Sunday of January, February, and March, we come together to share breakfast with anyone who wants to join us at The Coliseum (Wetherspoons) in Abergavenny. We operate a 'pay what you can' policy; breakfast is free, but we welcome donations from those who are able.
WELFARE
We provide assistance with form filling, benefit applications, and offer a listening ear through our telephone support.
WHAT'S THE POINT?
The purpose of our efforts is to give individuals who may not know about God, Jesus, or the Bible the chance to learn more, without stepping into an unfamiliar church building. The Bible poses the question, "How will they know if no one tells them?" (Romans 10:14), and that is our aim—to offer everyone the choice to accept or reject Jesus in an environment that isn’t designed to 'trap' anyone or make them feel uncomfortable.
